Dr Phillip Jeans

Dr Phillip Jeans completed his undergraduate studies at
Sydney University and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Following
graduation, Dr Jeans trained in surgery at Newcastle and six months at
Prince Henry Hospital Sydney.
Having completed the FRACS in 1986 he moved to Adelaide to further his
specialist education in hepatobiliary and upper GI surgery as well as
completing full endoscopy training, including ERCP. Dr Jeans spent seven
years at Flinders Medical Centre as a senior registrar and junior academic
and was involved in widespread research and teaching.
In 1988 he commenced extra laparoscopic training and in 1990 did training
in the USA and became one of the pioneers of the new laparoscopic procedures
in Australia, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic appendicectomy
and laparoscopic fundoplication (for oesophageal reflux).
Dr Jeans moved to Canberra in 1992 and has worked at all
the hospitals in Canberra, spending five years as Deputy Chairman and
Chairman respectively, of the Medical Advisory Committee of The Canberra
Hospital. Phil resigned from The Canberra Hospital in 2000 but continues
to practise at Calvary Public and Private Hospitals, John James Memorial
Hospital and The National Capital Private Hospital.
